An 86-year-old woman has died from injuries suffered when her car hit a tree while travelling on the outskirts of Gympie.

The woman, from Araluen, was the only occupant of the car when it left the road and crashed into the tree near Victory College on Monday June 27 just before 11am.

She was seriously injured in the crash and taken to Gympie Hospital, at the time in a stable condition.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said the woman was treated for suspected rib, chest and spinal injuries.

From there she was transported to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Police confirmed on Friday the woman had tragically since succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday July 6.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
