Who Owns Queensland’s farms: Biggest investors, landholders named

Funds backed by offshore capital are increasingly muscling in on Queensland farmland even as long-established pastoral families continue to hold a strong presence, The Weekly Times’ 10th annual Who Owns Australia investigation reveals.

Topping the list of landholders in Queensland is Macquarie Agriculture, the nation’s second-largest investor in farmland and water assets.

Through its expansive Paraway Pastoral Company, which spans 3.96 million hectares, along with Australia’s largest cotton operation at Cubbie Station (90,000 hectares) and Cowal Agriculture near Emerald (5976 hectares), Macquarie controls a footprint exceeding four million hectares across the state.

Ranked second is the North Australian Pastoral Company, majority-owned by the Queensland Investment Corporation, which manages 3.7 million hectares. Its holdings include the 1.2 million-hectare Marion Downs and 692,000-hectare Glenormiston near Boulia.

Third is Hughes Pastoral, owned by beef industry leaders Peter and Jane Hughes. The company holds 3.4 million hectares, including the vast 1.6 million-hectare Lake Nash Station, which straddles the Queensland–Northern Territory border.

Other significant landholders in Queensland include McDonald Holdings, with 3.36 million hectares, and the ASX-listed Australian Agricultural Company, which controls 3.3 million hectares.

Appleton Pastoral, Gibson Grazing, and McMillan Pastoral Company each hold around two million hectares, while the Lee family’s Australian Country Choice controls 1.64 million hectares.

Arrabury Pastoral Company holds 1.3 million hectares, followed by Stanbroke Pastoral Company with 1.2 million hectares and Consolidated Pastoral Company with 1.06 million hectares.
