The drama is on at James Nash State High School, with its Academy of Creative Arts co-curricular program launching its performance of Roald Dahl’s Matilda Jr in August 2022.
Twenty weeks of practice has been packed into the play, with about 70 hours of auditions, rehearsals and production behind the crew.
While the large public school has a history of outstanding school musicals, showcases and performances, Matilda Jr is its second production as part of the Academy of Creative Arts.
ACA holds a a big production every two years, with its first sellout show, Aladdin Jr, performed in early 2021 and rehearsals dating back to 2020.
“The thing that’s to look forward to that triple threat talent of these kids,” production director Courtney Perren said.
All 25 members of the cast will be singing, dancing and acting on stage compared to their previous show which had chorus, leads and dance groups.
“They do it all,” Ms Perren said.
This year’s production includes full lighting, costumes, set and multi-media in the school’s performing arts building.
The entire show is run by the students, from changing the sets to operating the lights, sound and microphones.
The performance is backed by four teachers and five students helping backstage, but the whole school is involved, with trade students building sets and other teachers stepping in to help.
Matilda Jr was already chosen as their next show while Aladdin Jr was still in production in 2020.
Having done a Disney fairytale genre, the crew wanted to throw a “realism style play” which suited everyone’s talents and capabilities, Ms Perren said.
“It would be great for the community to get behind, get your tickets and support these kids because they really have worked so hard at this show,” she said.
The 1.5 hours shows will be held from August 18-21, 2022.
