John Southern killed at two-car crash at Glenorchy

A driver who tragically died in a Bruce Highway crash near Maryborough has been identified as a much-loved father and grandfather. It comes as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

A man who was killed in a horrific crash at Glenorchy late last month has been identified.

John Southern, 56, died on March 28, 2025, when a white Isuzu D-Max travelling north on the Bruce Highway collided with his grey Toyota HiLux travelling south near Six Mile Road.

Mr Southern, the driver and sole occupant of the HiLux, died at the scene.

He was from the small rural community of Owanyilla, south of Maryborough.

A 70-year-old Caboolture man, the driver and sole occupant of the Isuzu D-Max, was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A funeral will be held for Mr Southern on April 11 at the Heritage Chapel at Maryborough Crematorium from 1pm.

In the funeral notice published this week, he was remembered as the beloved father of Brodie, Beau and Kate and a loving grandfather to Xander.

Forensic Crash Unit investigations remain ongoing to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam vision is urged to contact police.

Mr Southern was the second Fraser Coast grandfather to be killed in a crash that same week.

Hervey Bay motorbike rider Robert Glock died in a crash at Biggenden on March 22.
