History was made on Saturday when the Gladstone division one Meteors men’s team won the Central Queensland Hockey League (CQHL) grand final 3-2 in a gruelling match away from home against the Rockhampton Wanderers.
The game was more than just a grand final win, with the sound of the final buzzer marking Meteors’ first CQHL championship win in 28 years.
In previous finals the trophy has alway been won by a Rockhampton club.
Shannon Bobart and coach of the team said there was a lot of respect for the Wanderers team.
“Wanderers have won the CQHL competition more than 12 times in a row, so we knew we had to be at our best to beat them,” Bobart said.
“Everybody played well. Hayden Pease was amazing and our goal keeper David Nathan had an absolute cracker game standing out.
“It’s the third time in four years that we’ve made the grand final.”
Bobart added that his players knew if they “worked hard together as a team they could get the job done and come away with the win this year”.
After playing their “hearts out” the Meteors men’s team and their supporters indulged in a few celebratory beers enjoying the moment.
Spirits are high as the boys prepare for the local Gladstone grand final were they will take on Sparks in what is sure to be a hard-fought game to finish the season.
