Friends are rallying around the family of a “cheerful, outgoing” 12-year-old girl fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by a car in Gladstone.

Peter Harvey said his daughter Heather was left in critical condition with “catastrophic” injuries after being struck by a vehicle at Marian Close, Sun Valley about 10.02pm last Friday.

He said Heather lost a lot of oxygen to her brain because she had been trapped under the car for a substantial time.

“She was gone by the time they lifted the car off her but paramedics managed to revive her and rushed her to hospital,” he said.

Heather was flown from Gladstone to Townsville Hospital the day after the crash.

“They put her into an induced coma and we didn’t know just how bad her brain trauma was until a few days ago when they did some more scans,” Mr Harvey said.

“She’s got damage to the left, right and middle of the brain which isn’t good, they class it as stage two brain damage.

“That’s means they could bring her out of this coma and she could die or she’ll have no quality of life but we’re still holding out for a miracle as any parent would.

“She’s a fighter. She takes after me, she’ll fight through this.”

Mr Harvey said the crash had also left his daughter with a broken pelvis, broken ribs and fractures to her spine.

They are now looking to fly her down from Townsville to the Brisbane Children’s Hospital in the coming days for further treatment.

Members of the Jimboomba Car Club, where Heather’s father is a long-time member, have now rallied together to support Heather and the family during this hard time.

The club will be putting on a cruise and barbecue at Wyaralong Dam to raise funds to help the family with medical and relocation costs on April 3.

A GoFundMe has also been set up to provide some relief, which has so far raised about $2000.
