Tane Martin in Gladstone court for Chemist Warehouse theft

Cameras were watching when a man with “distinctive tattoos” decided to flog sunglasses and condoms from a pharmacy in the region where he works.

Tane James Martin faced Gladstone Magistrates Court for stealing sunglasses and condoms from a Chemist Warehouse store.

A fly-in, fly-out rigger, who lives on the Gold Coast and works in the Gladstone region, has faced court for a crime the magistrate described as “inexplicable.”

Tane James Martin, 25, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on July 17 to stealing.

The court heard that on May 29, Martin went into the Chemist Warehouse store at Clinton where he took a pair of sunglasses and then removed eight of 10 condoms from their box and put them in his pocket.

He placed the opened box back on a shelf and left the store without paying for the sunglasses or the condoms.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said Martin’s stealing was captured on CCTV.

“He has distinctive tattoos,” Sgt Ongheen said.

“His image was released on social media - he was identified by members of the public.”

The court heard that Martin had no criminal history and prior to his court appearance, he paid the business for the items he had stolen.

A solicitor said Martin was a fly-in, fly-out rigger who lived on the Gold Coast.

“This offence makes no sense to anybody, including my client,” the solicitor said.

The solicitor said Martin had just gone through a “bad break-up” and he didn’t know why he stole the items.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan said the crime was “inexplicable” because Martin was “fairly well paid” in his job.

She fined him $250 and did not record a conviction.
