An experienced rigger and dogman has been given a jail sentence for a domestic violence attack that saw him incarcerated for the first time in his life.

James Joseph Moodie, 45, who had a two-page criminal history, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to charges including common assault (domestic violence offence).

The court heard that on September 1, police attended a Gladstone residence and heard Moodie yelling at the female victim.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said prior to police arriving, Moodie assaulted the woman by dragging her in through a doorway and shoving her, causing her to fall backwards and a window to smash.

“These are serious acts of domestic violence,” Mr Boyd said.

Solicitor Sophie-Lee Oliver said this was Moodie’s first time in custody.

She said prior to his incarceration, he had worked as a rigger and dogman, having worked in that industry for more than 20 years.

“He concedes that this relationship with the aggrieved has been unhealthy for both parties,” Ms Oliver said.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced Moodie to nine months’ jail, declared 72 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served, and fixed immediate parole.

A conviction was recorded.
