A Central Queensland DV offender who grabbed his victim’s steering wheel while she was driving, has been given a jail sentence.

Adrian Geoffrey McMillan, 32, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to charges including dangerous operation of a vehicle (domestic violence offence) and unlicensed driving.

The court heard that on June 30 at Gladstone, the aggrieved woman was driving and McMillan was in the front passenger seat.

During the drive, the woman told McMillan it was “time to leave” her home.

The court heard McMillan reacted by calling her “a cheater, a dog, and a sl**” and threatened to “kill us all” before grabbing the steering wheel which moved the car out of its lane at about 40 to 50kmh.

It was told when they got home, McMillan continued to yell at the woman and refused to leave despite being asked to do so.

The woman called triple-0.

The unlicensed driving offence (demerit points suspended) was detected by police on the Dawson Highway, West Gladstone, on November 1.

McMillan had a five-page criminal history, a traffic history of the same length, and at the time of committing these latest offences he was on a suspended sentence.

Solicitor Bianca Wieland said McMillan, a single father of one, was employed with a good work history.

Ms Wieland said McMillan had been diagnosed with anxiety and depression but he was not on medication for those conditions.

In relation to the offending, Ms Wieland said McMillan conceded his behaviour was poor and he was remorseful for what he did.

“They weren’t driving quickly,” the solicitor said about the June 30 incident.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced McMillan to eight months’ jail with immediate parole and extended the operational period of the suspended sentence.

A conviction was recorded.
