A man has been hospitalised after falling from a crane at a Gladstone workplace.

The man reportedly fell four metres from a crane platform at Rio Tinto’s Boyne Smelter.

According to the Queensland Ambulance Service, they arrived at 7.12pm on Thursday, September 2.

He was taken to Gladstone Hospital in a stable condition with back pain.

“Rio Tinto confirms that a worker was taken to hospital after falling from a crane platform at the Boyne Smelter on Thursday night and is resting in hospital after treatment for his injuries,” a Rio Tinto spokesperson said in a statement.

“Nothing is more important to Rio Tinto than the safety of our employees and we are focused on providing support for the worker and his family, as we work with authorities to investigate this incident.”

A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspector is currently onsite making further enquiries into the incident.

This is one of many workplace incidents in Gladstone during 2021, following a man in his 30s suffering serious injuries after falling at the Yarwun Refinery, and another man had his finger crushed at the Boyne Island smelter.
