A Queensland refinery worker is in hospital after falling from a significant height before coming into contact with dangerous caustic chemicals.

A man has suffered acid burns in a fall from scaffolding at Rio Tinto's Yarwun refinery.

Rio Tinto has launched an investigation after a man in his 30s suffered significant injuries after falling from height at the company’s Yarwun refinery on Tuesday morning.

Ambulance services transported a man in his 30s to Gladstone Hospital following the fall from which he landed in residual caustic chemical.

Emergency services responded to the workplace accident at the Rio Tinto refinery on Hanson Road, Yarwun before 10am on Tuesday.

It was reported a person suffered a fall from a scaffold and then came into contact with the chemicals.

QAS has since confirmed the man suffered significant leg injuries, believed to be a fractured femur and ankle.

He also suffered what are described as “superficial” burns to his chest, face and back.

The scene has reportedly had to be decontaminated.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors were en route to the Yarwun Alumina Refinery after midday to make further enquiries.

A Rio Tinto spokesperson confirmed the incident.

“Rio Tinto can confirm a worker was injured at Rio Tinto Yarwun this morning after falling from height,” the spokesperson said.

“The Yarwun Emergency Response Team provided immediate first aid and the person was taken to Gladstone Hospital for treatment.

“Our first priority is always the safety and welfare of our people and contractors.

“An investigation into the incident is underway and relevant authorities have been notified.”

It is understood the worker was a contractor.
