David Voss removed a stowaway Eastern Brown snake from a Gladstone man’s car on Monday

An experienced snake catcher was thrown in the deep end on an after hours dinner trip after receiving a call for help to remove an Eastern Brown snake from a car.

A trip to grab dinner landed an experienced Gladstone snake catcher in a tricky snake removal situation with an Eastern Brown.

The venom of the Eastern Brown snake is rated as the second most toxic of all snake venoms in the world, however, David Voss did not back down from the challenge.

Mr Voss, a snake catcher with five years experience, received a call on Monday night around 7.30pm from a man who had a snake in his car.

“The one in a million thing about it was, the man was calling from exactly the same car park I happened to be in at exactly the same time I was,” Mr Voss said.

“I quickly went over to where his car was and he said it was a brown snake, I thought it might have been a python.

“But when I had a look through the car it was an Eastern Brown that was moving throughout the car, under the seats, all over the place.”

Mr Voss said whenever he was catching an Eastern Brown he was always on guard, especially at night.

“They are a very fast snake, especially when they strike and it is much easier to catch them during the day when they are more visible,” he said.

“It was probably one of the more difficult snake removals I have had in my time, and I have relocated around 300 Eastern Browns in my time.”

Mr Voss said it was uncommon for snakes to hitch rides in cars, especially after the driver had travelled from Rockhampton to Gladstone that evening - a distance around 110km.

“It is not common at all for a venomous snake to get inside a vehicle, very rare in fact for the animal to behave like that,” he said.

“A car’s engine bay is a dangerous place for a snake to hitch a ride, but this one only had minimal damage to some tail scales.”

Mr Voss asked people to be vigilant when they were out and about this summer.

“If they can wear closed in shoes when they are walking in bushland that is a good idea,” he said.

“Just keep your eyes open, this was night time and they young bloke had pretty keen eyes and was quick to call an expert.”
