World Health Organisation boss shares grim new COVID warning as cases skyrocket

As schools embark on a challenging start to the year, private schools on the Fraser Coast have revealed their Covid protocols.

Of the five private schools contacted in the region, three revealed they will adhere to the State Government mandate requiring Queensland school teachers to be fully vaccinated by the start of the 2022 school year.

The mandate, which was announced towards the end of Term 4 in 2021 and applies to teachers, maintenance employees and volunteers in state and private schools, threatened to knock thousands of teachers from the state’s workforce.

On the Fraser Coast, it is hard to get a picture of how high and dry the mandate has left education providers, if staff members have decided to remain unvaccinated.

Fraser Coast Anglican College principal Joe Wright said their compliance with the mandate had caused “minimal” impact to school staffing.

He said no teachers had sought vaccination exemption.

“We have been able to fill all positions and are happy with the quality of the appointments.”

Bayside Christian College principal Brian Grimes said the wellbeing of staff, students and their families was the school’s priority.

“We are committed to complying with the Queensland Government’s mandates as they apply to educational provisions in response to Covid-19 and its variants,” he said.

“Our staff are highly supportive, caring and committed to the very best outcomes for our students, and will continue to provide a safe educational environment for members of the College community.”

Carinity Education Glendyne confirmed in a statement they would also be following the mandate for teachers before the school year started.

Last week, the State Government pushed the start of the 2022 school year back two weeks from January 24 to February 7, excluding Year 11 and 12, who will learn remotely for one week from January 31, before returning.

Vulnerable children and those of essential workers can start term one on time with supervision on site.

St James Lutheran College and Riverside Christian College had not responded to requests for information on the vaccination mandate.
