A Urangan mum has described her daughter’s heartbreaking battle since she received burns to 13 per cent of her body after a shocking incident involving a backyard fire.

Hannah Jacobs was celebrating her birthday with her family on July 13 when her eight-year-old daughter, Daniella Jacobs-Herd, walked past their small fire pit while wearing her hooded blanket.

A small gust of wind ignited the hooded blanket, instantly causing severe burns to Daniella’s face and body.

“I didn’t realise how flammable they were,” Hannah said.

The blanket melted to Daniella’s wrists, fingers and chest and she suffered flash burns to her face.

A neighbour rushed over to help Daniella’s father Dylan and sister Ebony while Hannah called an ambulance, keeping Daniella in the shower until paramedics arrived.

Hannah said they had witnessed chunks of skins falling off due to the shocking burns her daughter had received.

Daniella was raced to Hervey Bay Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries and then flown to Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Over the past eight weeks, Daniella, who has autism and ADHD, has undergone 15 procedures and has needed skin grafts to treat her burns.

Hannah and her family have stayed at Ronald McDonald House to stay close to her.

She has faced a staph infection and an MSRA infection, but Daniella had come along in leaps and bounds, Hannah said.

Hannah said she was proud of her daughter for coming so far.

“She’s survived so much,” she said.

She said her daughter had received bravery beads for every procedure she’d had to endure.

“She’s taken it on like a champ,” Hannah said.

It comes after a spate of incidents across the Wide Bay involving backyard fires in the past few months.

A man in his 20s was rushed to hospital with significant burns after an incident at a home in Beelbi Creek on August 8.

The incident happened at 3.58pm when the man was putting petrol on a backyard fire, a spokeswoman from the Queensland Ambulance Service said.

The man suffered burns to his face, leg and hand and was transported to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition.

On August 4 at 7.18pm, a girl in her teens was transported to hospital in a stable condition with facial burns after a backyard fire incident at a private address in Point Vernon.

On July 20 at 10.54pm at Kawungan, a man in his 40s was taken to hospital with burns to his legs after a backyard fire at a private address.

He was transported in a stable condition to the Hervey Bay Hospital.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family as they remain in Brisbane supporting Daniella.
