NAPLAN data showing students falling behind 'not news to teachers'

The principal of the Fraser Coast’s best performed NAPLAN school said it was a combination of hard work and good culture that led to the strong results.

Principal Joe Wright from Fraser Coast Anglican College said the school had scored above the national average in every test.

He said the school had achieved strong results in the annual tests every year since it opened.

Hard work and high standards were important in achieving the results, which had the school ranked in the top third of the state, Mr Wright said.

“We don’t do anything major to prepare (the students),” he said.

“We just familiarise them with the tests.

“With good programs, good teachers and a good culture, that’s the results you get.”

Mr Wright said the school had a 99 per cent participation rate.

Just 1 per cent of students hadn’t completed the tests after being withdrawn by their parents, he said.

“We encourage all students to participate in all of them.”

Seeing the strong results was gratifying, Mr Wright said.

“It is pleasing because you know how much goes into that from staff and students in the years leading up to it,” he said.

“It’s recognition of the hard work they have done.”

Given the challenges school still faced because of the Covid pandemic, the results in the past few years had been especially pleasing, Mr Wright said.

“Covid is still a factor and is going to be a factor for a while,

“It certainly didn’t make it easier. I take my hat off to students around the country, it’s been a tough couple of years.”
