Queensland’s top academic schools have been named, as the full list of every school’s 2021 NAPLAN results can be revealed for the first time in two years.
From inner-city Brisbane schools to Far North Queensland, schools across the state have shown huge improvements, while Queensland also recorded its best ever results for year 3 writing.
The top 10 secondary schools – comprising of Year 7 and Year 9 results – were largely dominated by the state’s most prestigious private schools, including Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Brisbane Grammar School, and Somerville House.
But taking out the top spot was the selective state school, Queensland Academy for Science Mathematics and Technology, while Brisbane State High School came in at No.4.
The top primary schools also featured a number of state schools, including Sunnybank Hills State School at No. 1, Indooropilly State School (No. 2) and Ashgrove State School (No. 5).
St Peters Lutheran College, Citipointe Christian College and Ipswich Grammar School were also top performers.
As the results were released on Wednesday, Education Minister Grace Grace announced in parliament that from next year, students would sit their annual NAPLAN tests earlier.
Ms Grace said as a result of the review conducted by Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT into the annual numeracy and literacy tests, the country’s education ministers had agreed to move the test to term 1, rather than term 2.
“Moving the test forward means that valuable dataset will be available earlier in the year to inform teaching and learning programs and to give parents information about their child’s performance earlier in the year,” Ms Grace said.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also congratulated the state’s top schools, and said after two of the “toughest and most disruptive time for Queensland students in the history of our state”, students had scored an “A plus”.
“Despite all of (the challenges) and based on the latest NAPLAN results out this week, I can safely say that this cohort is among the best and brightest we have ever seen in Queensland.
“In particular, students at the Queensland Academy for Science Mathematics and Technology performed very well.
“The academy’s results were above the average across every category when compared to schools with students from similar backgrounds.”
