A man is in hospital following a vicious and unprovoked attack on the Esplanade in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Hervey Bay Police say the victim, a 59-year-old man, was looking for cigarette butts outside the Torquay Hotel at 4am when he was confronted by a 42-year-old man.

The 59-year-old suffered four broken ribs, a collapsed lung and severe bruising to his face and body.

He was rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital where he remained on Monday in a serious but stable condition.

A police spokesman said the two men were “fleetingly known to each other” and described the behaviour by the alleged offender as “out of character and unpredictable”.

The alleged attacker was charged with grievous bodily harm and was due to face Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

More to come.
