Senior Sergeant Matt Swan talks about fatal hit and run.

Police will investigate whether speed, alcohol and illicit substances played a part in an alleged hit and run that killed a woman in Urangan overnight.

Tash Raven, 43, was walking home from a social event about midnight on Sunday when she was allegedly struck by a silver Ford Falcon on Boundary Rd in Urangan, according to police.

Police allege driver of the Falcon left the scene, while Ms Raven died of her injuries despite the best efforts of emergency services.

Ms Raven was treated by paramedics at the scene of the incident at the corner of Boundary Rd and Elizabeth Streets.

A 41-year-old man has since been charged.

District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Matt Swan addressed media in the wake of the tragic incident on Sunday.

He said emergency services had been called to the scene about midnight.

“Upon arriving police have located a 43-year-old female pedestrian that had been struck by a car,” he said.

“Investigations identified a silver Ford Facon was travelling in an easterly direction along Boundary Rd in Urangan and it appears at this stage the vehicle has struck the pedestrian.

“Police have located that vehicle a short time later,” Snr Sgt Swan said, adding that the vehicle had been seized.

Snr Sgt Swan said it had been a “severely horrific” scene for emergency services.

“Investigations have identified that the female person has been struck by the vehicle, which was travelling at some speed.

“Speed, manner of driving, driving behaviour as well as drugs and alcohol is all forming part of the investigation that is being conducted with the forensic crash unit in the Wide Bay as well as the CIB.”

The speed limit along Boundary Rd was 60km/h and initial investigations suggested the vehicle was doing “well in excess” of the signposted speed limit.

“At this point the exact speed is unknown however we do have that information that indicates the speed was well and truly above not just the capability of anyone’s driving skill-set.”

Snr Sgt Swan said it did not appear the two were known to each other.

He said police were appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Snr Sgt Swan said the man had handed himself in to Hervey Bay Police Station on Sunday morning.

He appeared to be “in some shock” over what had transpired, but the driver was co-operating with police, he said.

At this point in time, it appeared the woman was walking home from a social event when she was struck by the car, he said.

A crime scene was established between Stringybark Drive and Booral Rd, the spokeswoman said.

Police are appealing for any information or dashcam footage that could assist with the investigation.
