The unsupervised learner driver sentenced to nine years jail over the crash that killed 19-year-old Chelsea Jane Maddox in 2023 must still answer more charges, including two more counts of dangerous driving.

Guy Sean Leigh Gallagher, 28, pleaded guilty in the Maryborough District Court sitting at Hervey Bay in July 2024 to one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while excessively speeding and having left the scene.

The court heard he was 27 when he caused his white Ford Falcon to hit a power pole on Albert St, Maryborough on February 19, 2023, doing 98km/h in a 60km zone.

The car slid 42m before crashing into the pole, leaving his friend and passenger, Chelsea, with severe injuries she would never recover from.

She died in hospital the next day.

Gallagher’s other charges were mentioned in Maryborough Magistrates Court on Monday, August 5.

Among them is a charge of dangerously operating or interfering with a vehicle, two counts of obstructing police, seriously assaulting police by biting or spitting, another charge of dangerously operating a vehicle – domestic violence offence, evading police, wilful damage, unlawful possession of a weapon, driving while uninsured, driving unsupervised as a learner driver and driving an unregistered vehicle.

The two dangerous driving charges mentioned on Monday related to incidents on February 22, 2023, and February 24, 2023.

Gallagher did not appear during the brief mention.

Acting on his behalf, lawyer Morgan Harris said the matters were both directly related and not directly related to the matter finalised in district court last month.

“Unfortunately the Crown refused any sort of transfer of these charges,” Mr Harris said.

He said the charges would “go a certain way”, indicating the likelihood of a guilty plea, but a 45 minute videolink would be needed to finalise them.

The charges were adjourned to August 2024.
