The Queensland Government has given the green light to the 436.5MW Tarong West Wind Farm, a major renewable energy initiative in the South Burnett region.

The approval comes as part of the state’s commitment to ramping up its renewable energy output, with plans to meet 70 per cent renewable energy by 2032 and 80 per cent by 2035.

Publicly owned Stanwell Corporation, in collaboration with global renewable energy developer RES, will spearhead the project.

Located about 30km southwest of Kingaroy, the wind farm will feature 97 turbines and is projected to generate enough clean energy to power around 230,000 homes.

The project is supported by $776.1 million from the Queensland Government’s Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund.

It is expected to create about 200 construction jobs and 15 ongoing operational roles.

Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, Mick de Brenni, said the project is about generating clean energy and job security for the local workforce.

“Building this major energy infrastructure creates about 200 construction jobs, delivers a financial boost to the region, and provides long-term operations and maintenance roles,” Mr de Brenni said.

The State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) ensured the project includes measures to protect ecological areas, including up to 13.47 hectares of koala habitat, with conditions for offsetting impacts and rehabilitating cleared areas.

Stanwell CEO Michael O’Rourke highlighted the importance of the wind farm in achieving Queensland’s renewable energy targets.

“The Tarong West Wind Farm is critical to not only Stanwell’s plan to decarbonise our existing portfolio but also to Queensland reaching its renewable energy goals,” Mr O’Rourke stated.

“This development brings us closer to our aim of having 9 to 10GW of large-scale wind and solar capacity by 2035.”

Construction of the Tarong West Wind Farm is expected to begin in 2025.
