A disability support worker was drunk when she hit and glassed a teenager who was in a fight with her boyfriend, Maryborough District Court heard.

Ashleigh Kathleen Hose, 29, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The court heard Hose, 27, was at the Lamington Hotel in Tinana when the fight broke out and the victim, who she’d never met previously, was 19.

It also heard Hose had been in a verbal fight with victim’s friend before it turned physical began between the victim and Hose’s boyfriend and Hose then punched the victim while holding a beer glass in her hand, causing a laceration the teen’s lip.

In the wake of the fight, Hose received a 12 month ban from licensed venues across Queensland and an indefinite ban from the Lamington Hotel, the court was told.

It was conceded that the offending was reactionary to some extent as Hose responded to the teenager punching at her boyfriend, but it was not accepted that she was aiding in his self-defence, the court heard.

In Hose’s defence, the court heard she was working as a disability support worker and had the ongoing support of her family.

Letters from her doctor, mother and other references were submitted to the court.

The court heard Hose had attended a number of appointments in regard to her mental health since the fight.

It also heard Hose had been in a highly emotional state seeing the situation her boyfriend was in had reacted “unknowing that the glass she had been holding … was still in her hand”.

Judge Anthony Rafter said when a physical fight broke out between the two groups, Hose had seen the victim punching her boyfriend and she had intervened, punching the victim in the face with a beer glass.

He said the victim had a permanent scar below his lip, which was a constant reminder of the events of that night and felt anxious and embarrassed about going out because of his concern about seeing Hose and her partner.

Hose was sentenced to 18 months in jail, wholly suspended for a period of two years.

A conviction was recorded.

Hose was shielded by her family from waiting media as they left the court on Tuesday.
