The Fraser Coast’s newest bakery has charmed residents with its freshly baked pastries of which they are already selling out regularly.
The Baker’s Room, owned by former Canberrans Louise and Nick Smith has opened in Urangan at the former site of the Dayman Street General Store Cafe.
The building was constructed in 1924, and the Smiths hope it will become a local hub and go-to spot for residents craving a coffee and croissant to begin their day.
Speaking to the Chronicle on Friday, as the space was a hub of activity with people lined out the door, the Smiths explained every product in the shop was handcrafted with care, from freshly baked bread to mouth-watering pastries.
The Smiths have dedicated much of their lives to all things pastry; first operating a part of the Baker’s Delight Group from 1994 to 2011, where they ran numerous franchises before branching out on their own and operating Crust Bakery in Fyshwick Markets in Canberra from 2011-2021.
In February 2023, they decided to move to Queensland, and have not looked back since, setting up their home at Point Vernon.
“The people and the weather made it a very easy decision to move,” Mr Smith said.
“We enjoy the atmosphere and lifestyle here and want to bring our daily fresh-baked goods to the community.”
Louise said the community response had been “more than we could ever hope for”.
The couple sees the Fraser Coast as their forever home and hopes to one day retire here.
