Western Downs storm damage: Trees felled, roads flooded and crops destroyed in devastating supercell storm

Several towns across the Western Downs were hit hard by heavy storms over the past few days, with the full extent of the damage still unknown.

The Western Downs has been thrashed by heavy storms with trees felled, crops destroyed and cars caught in flood water.

Jandowae, Chinchilla and surrounding areas received the brunt of the severe thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon and were severely impacted by supercells and hail storms from around 3.30pm.

In Jandowae two people were rushed to hospital after their car became caught in floodwater on the intersection of Jandowae Connection Rd and Winfields Rd at 6.42pm.

Both people escaped the car in the incident just before 7pm and walked to safety before being taken to Jandowae Hospital for assessment.

Roads were also impacted by flood water with social media posts showing Chinchilla’s Inverai Rd completely submerged.

Farmers in the area have also reported extensive crop damage as a destructive hailstorm swept over the Western Downs at about 3.30pm wiping out crops.

Kathy Harris, of Jandowae reported a two-tonne an acre barley crop was destroyed in the storm which she said was “absolutely devastating”.

In a Facebook post the Western Downs Regional Council said they had been working overnight to fix the storm damage including clearing fallen branches and damaged trees, we well as repairing potholes.
