Burlesque Brisbane: Club Cremorne back at QPAC by popular demand

All bets are off in this post-pandemic world, with a show you never thought you’d see at QPAC making a return visit.

Opera Qld: Lorelei (in isolation)

Burlesque star Jacqueline Furey never expected to be doing her act at QPAC.

That seemed a bit mainstream for her naughtiness, but the pandemic has had a positive effect on using Queensland talent and the girl from Emerald has capitalised on that.

She appeared at QPAC’s cabaret show Club Cremorne as part of QPAC Unlocked when we were coming out of lockdown last year.

The show was a huge hit, and is now back by popular demand, opening tonight in the Cremorne Theatre and running until March 6.

It will be hosted again by comedian Damien Power, who is a rude, crude, very funny individual, and the show will feature Furey, internationally renowned beatboxer Tom Thum, Circus Company 2, poet and rapper Sachem and others.

Furey dazzled audiences last time with her sword swallowing and her sexy antics but this time she has something new.

“I have my angle grinder with me this time,” Furey says.

“That’s all I’m saying though because I don’t want to ruin it for people.

“It’s all part of the sideshow tradition and when people watch sideshow, secretly they want something to go wrong.”

If things went awry with an angle grinder there could be trouble but hopefully QAC is covered.

MC Damien Power had the audience rolling around with laughter last time.

Is he still funny?

“I ask myself that every day,” Power says, promising a stand-up routine that is “down the end of the spectrum near distasteful”.

“A lot of my stuff is borderline.

“People are secretly thrilled in this time of political correctness when a lot of comedians steer clear of saying anything controversial.”

Not Power.

He’s happy to push the envelope again, and he’ll be doing that every night at Club Cremorne, which we should point out is a show for people 18 and over.
