A night out for a 16-year-old boy spiralled out of control after he had his pinky finger partially amputated during a ‘wounding’ attack which left him in intensive care.

It comes after police were called to Bauer St near the Esplanade at Bargara about 8.10pm on Friday night amid reports of a disturbance.

Police will allege the boy was slashed with a broken bottle during an argument.

A 20-year-old Walkervale man, known to the teen, has been charged with one count each of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and stealing.

The boy’s heartbroken mother told the Bundaberg NewsMail on Wednesday she was counting her blessings that her son, who cannot be named, was still alive.

“My son had received lacerations and stab wounds in the lower right belly, up his right side near rib area and lower back just above the right hip,” the boy’s mother said.

“The surgeon said he was one very lucky boy that his major arteries and organs weren’t hit, as from what I see, [the wounds] were just inches away.”

The attack left the boy with a partially amputated finger, and had to undergo urgent surgery to save it.

“He received lacerations to his left hand thumb and ring finger, and also [had a] partially amputated pinky finger which the surgeon had to put back together and place an iron rod in it,” his mother said.

The 16-year-old was transferred from the ICU to a regular ward on Saturday and was discharged to go home on Monday afternoon.

“His surgery went well. He has multiple follow up appointments ahead with physiotherapy and a bunch of others starting next week right through to next month,” she said.

“We will be busy in the next two months with his recovery process.”

The mum said rugby league was her son’s life and he had “a bright future” ahead.

“[It] will be a slow process healing physically and mentally,” his mum said.

“I can only thank God I still have my boy with me alive and breathing still. We will just take one day at a time and count our blessings.”

Anyone with information, who witnessed the incident or has relevant CCTV or dashcam footage, is urged to contact police.
