Reddit users lash Bundaberg over locals and lack of things to do
The region’s population surged during the pandemic as newcomers left the city and relocated to the country, but some of the new neighbours are less than happy with their new home. Check out what they hate here.
Bundaberg
Don't miss out on the headlines from Bundaberg. Followed categories will be added to My News.
A boring city with poor infrastructure that’s inhabited by racists, hostile locals and hoons, and where the only things to do are drink or walk on the underwhelming Hummock.

And if you want to be able to afford the aircon required to beat the killer humidity, you’d better invest in solar.
These are just some of the comments made by Bundaberg’s new residents on digital forum Reddit.
The comments came after one user announced his move to the Rum City.
In January 2023, the man asked for advice on finding a place to stay, but was met with a number of reviews from newcomers.
User chrisg told the forum, Bundaberg appeared to be a “whole different battle”.
“I’ve constantly heard nothing but bad things about Bundaberg,” he said.
“I can’t stand country towns, but I’m compelled to go to Bundy for professional reasons, however, finding a reasonably priced place is not only hard due to scarcity, but I’ve actually seen Gold Coast listings online that are cheaper in Bundaberg.”
Reddit user geosaus has only just moved to town, but isn’t impressed.
“Move here a couple of months ago. It’s like watching paint dry,” they said.
“Nice climate and more affordable living than the coast... town has noticeably minimal infrastructure if you’re used to the Gold Coast/city life.
“Not much to do if you don’t drink, seems to be the main passtime for people here. Not even a mountain to climb, the place is flat and (I) don’t like rum. Send help.”
When fellow user FatBoyCrash said of all the country towns they’d visited, Bundaberg seemed to be the biggest fan of the bottle, geosaus said there “mustn’t be much else going on”.
Uturn11, originally from New South Wales, didn’t mince words.
“Now one of the biggest cons I’ve found to be is the locals, at least a good majority of them anyway,” they said.
“If they aren’t doing burn-outs and revving their s****y cars, they’re being racist on social media telling you to f*** back off to New South Wales.”
Another user simply advised the original poster to change jobs in order to avoid the city.
Yet another user, snokeflakeplsmelt, said they were originally from Bundaberg but did not want to live there either.
“Bundy has a rental shortage and the locals will be hostile towards you if you ask on their Facebook groups (about) moving there,” they said.
It wasn’t all negative, though.
User suzy2013gf said they lived in Bundaberg for three years before leaving and it was the rum that got them through.
