An elderly man has been jailed after a jury found him guilty of indecent treatment of a child and attempted rape following a Bundaberg District Court trial.

Kevin Bernard Keogh, 81, had pleaded not guilty to the charges relating to offences dating back to the late 70s.

The woman said that Keogh indecently touched and attempted to rape her on the veranda of her grandparents’ home when she was seven years old.

The trial started on Monday and the jury handed own its verdict on Tuesday.

The complainant gave a victim impact statement via videolink before a closed court.

Judge Brad Farr sentenced Keogh to a head sentence of four years’ prison for the charge of attempted rape, and 18 months for two charges of indecent treatment of a child under 12.

Both terms of imprisonment will be served concurrently, with Keogh to be released on a suspended sentence after 15 months.
