When a woman walked up to a man in Bundaberg’s CBD and asked him for a cigarette, he could not have imagined what would transpire next.

On Tuesday, Bundaberg Magistrates Court heard how just after midnight on October 28, 2022, officers on patrol came across a man nursing a bleeding wound to his face on the seat outside Chemist Warehouse.

The court heard CCTV captured the moments mother-of-one Christine Megan Robinson, 34, approached the man to ask for a cigarette, before running to grab a beer bottle, smashing it against a wall and using the broken remains to throw into her victim’s face.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Carl Spargo told the court the incident was unprovoked and that the victim had not had time to prepare for what was coming.

Sergeant Spargo said the man had not acted aggressively towards his attacker at all.

When police found Robinson, she had dry blood on her hands and a cut on her finger. She was initially too drunk to be interviewed.

The man had to have stitches for the wound on his brow, which the court heard could leave scarring.

Robinson’s lawyer Thomas Bray told the court his client, who appeared by videolink from custody, had a history of alcohol use which started in her teens, and she had been engaged as a gardener while in custody.

Robinson, who pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm, also pleaded guilty to two counts of unlicensed driving and one count of drink driving.

The court heard the driving offences had arisen last year, with Robinson returning a reading of 0.057 on one occasion after consuming bourbon throughout the day.

In sentencing, Magistrate Edwina Rowan highlighted the seriousness of Robinson’s offending, with the defendant having a four-page criminal history.

“The victim describes not knowing you and being approached by you for a cigarette, he’s had very little interaction with you before you became aggressive towards him,” Ms Rowan said.

“That is of very significant concern, Miss Robinson, to this court, because it seems that your behaviour was quite impulsive, but it left the victim with an injury which could have been, or have, far worse consequences had that bottle hit his eye.”

Robinson sobbed as she was sentenced.

For the offence of assault occasioning bodily harm, she was sentenced to two years’ jail, with parole from April 28 with 158 days of pre-sentence custody declared as time served.

She must also serve 40 hours of community service.

For driving on a suspended licence in October last year, Robinson was sentenced to one months’ prison, to be served concurrently, and was disqualified from driving for six months.

For unlicensed and drink driving in September last year, Robinson received a months’ prison for each offence, to be served concurrently, and six months’ disqualification for each offence.
