A Bundaberg father-of-two was caught red-handed when police found a rifle and two lots of ammunition in the rafters of his home.
Police uncovered the forbidden items in the home of David John Cruse, a 47-year-old contractor, on November 6, 2022.
On Monday, Bundaberg Magistrates Court heard Cruse received the items “from a friend”.
Lawyer Thomas Bray told the court the gun had no firing pin and was inoperative.
However, Magistrate Edwina Rowan said the fact the unregistered rifle and ammunition had been hidden meant the defendant knew he wasn’t supposed to have them, a factor she said “attracts a degree of seriousness”.
Cruse, who pleaded guilty to one count each of authority required to possess explosives and unlawful possession of a category A weapon, was convicted and fined $600, referred to SPER.
The weapon and ammunition was forfeited to the Crown.
