A prominent builder and businessman self-medicated with illegal drugs after sustaining serious injuries in a desert race, Bundaberg Magistrates Court has heard.

Callum Leigh Aaron Dobson pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of possessing drugs and explosives.

A charge of supplying dangerous drugs was dropped by police due to a lack of evidence.

Police prosecutor Tina Bland told the court Dobson, 32, cooperated with the search of his home office where a box containing drug items was found.

In it were two clip seal plastic bags containing MDMA tablets and white powder with a total weight of 1.35 grams.

Dobson told police he had been using MDMA to treat his depression after viewing videos he found on the internet about MDMA micro-dosing.

Police also found tablets which Dobson said were a “knockoff” of Xanax, the active ingredient of which was the prohibited drug Alprazolam.

The court heard police also found several tightly rolled bank notes, a set of digital scales and a blender coated with a white substance.

Dobson sustained significant in a motorcycle crash while competing in a desert race for which he self-medicated using the illegal drugs, the court heard.

Dobson admitted to police that he used the bank notes to snort drugs, the scales to weight the drugs and the blender to break up rocks of cocaine that he had used recreationally.

Elsewhere in the house police found a large number of fireworks, which Dobson said he had purchased lawfully in the Northern Territory but admitted bringing them into Queensland unlawfully.

Dobson’s lawyer, Matt Maloy, told the court his client had started a successful building business employing five people after working as a carpenter, and was married with two children.

Mr Maloy said Dobson sustained “very significant injuries” in a motorcycle crash while competing in a desert race, for which he was prescribed a “cocktail of drugs” including morphine.

Dobson suffered a series of complications from the medication and injuries, including difficulty sleeping and a loss of business due to not being able to work.

The court heard Dobson was using the drugs found in the police search to sleep and to treat his depression, which he recognised was “no excuse” for possessing those drugs.

In sentencing, Acting Magistrate Paul Byrne told Dobson that while he took into consideration the serious injuries he had sustained in the desert race, Dobson should not have self-medicated using illegal drugs.

“You can’t do that,” Mr Byrne said.

“You need to go through the formal channels and seek appropriate medical specialists to be diagnosed prescription medication.”

Dobson was fined $1,000 in total for all charges, and convictions were not recorded.
