Ammy More critical in Brisbane hospital following tent fire at Bundaberg homeless enclave

The family of a woman, who was “living on the streets” when she suffered serious burns in a fire at a Queensland campground, has asked people to “pray” for her as she fights for life in hospital.

A woman seriously injured in a tent fire at a Bundaberg homeless enclave was in a critical condition on Friday.

It comes after this publication revealed on Thursday that two people had been rushed to hospital following the blaze a campground.

The family of Ammy More has since posted updates on her condition on social media, saying she sustained burns to 80 per cent of her body and was put into an induced coma at Bundaberg Hospital before being transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

A Metro North Hospital and Health Service spokesperson confirmed on Friday Ms More was in a critical but stable condition.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the incident was being investigated “self-harm” related.

Ms More’s father, Glenn More, asked family and friends to pray for his daughter’s recovery.

“I want to ask my family and friends to pray for my daughter Ammy who was living in a tent on the streets and which caught fire early (Thursday morning),” Mr More said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

“Please pray for her recovery and many months (years) of rehabilitation.”

In reply, Tania Stringfellow said “sorry to hear this terrible news Uncle Glenn More will be praying for her and sending lots of love to you”.

Emily More said “send my prayers to her … I hope she’s okay … no one deserves this kind of thing.”

A second person was injured in the fire but was in a stable condition.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said three fire crews arrived at the location by the Burnett River on McGill Road in Kalkie at 10.10am Thursday following reports of a tent fire which had spread to the surrounding grass.

The spokesman said the grassfire had been extinguished by the tent occupants, and fire crews had it extinguished by 10.20am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a woman in her 40s was transported to Bundaberg Base Hospital in a serious condition, with a man of undetermined age also transported with minor burns.

Detective Brendan Smith from Bundaberg Police said QPS had declared a crime scene, and the cause of the fire was under investigation by specialist fire investigators.

The tragedy also comes as experts call for more action to address the housing crisis in Bundaberg, with more than 1,200 people waiting for social housing in the region according to the latest data released in August 2023.
