Bargara youth charged over alleged assault of 68-year-old man

Police have revealed new details in the investigation of the shocking alleged assault of a man at Kelly’s Beach over the Christmas school holidays.

Police have charged a juvenile over the alleged assault of a 68-year-old man in Bargara in January.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said a 17-year-old Bargara boy was charged with one count each of serious assault and wilful damage, and he is due to appear in Bundaberg Children’s Court on February 13.

The alleged offending involved an alleged assault of a man, also from Bargara, in front of his wife at Kelly’s Beach on January 8 around 5.40pm.

Inspector Damien Wells from the Bundaberg police patrol group said Child Protection investigation unit detectives interviewed five youths allegedly identified at the scene.

Inspector Wells said that while police would hold any offenders to account including juvenile offenders, the incident was unusual for the Bargara community and related to an influx of tourists over summer.

“I’m just asking that the community accept that what happened here ... is an exceedingly rare event,” he said.

“The population of Bargara spikes over the holiday period ... what happened on Monday is unfortunate, but it’s an exception.”
