2024 Bundaberg Preps: First day of school photos

Cupcakes, treasure hunts and story time helped hundreds of Bundaberg Prep students and their parents through their very first morning of school on a milestone day full of emotion and excitement. See the photos:

More than 43,000 Prep students across Queensland started their schooling journey on Monday, with nerves, smiles and a few tears (from parents and children) making it a memorable day in many ways.

Education Minister Di Farmer welcomed all students, whether Prep students starting their first day at school or older children moving through the grades.

“While I want to give a special welcome to all the Preppies, who are just starting their learning adventures, today is a super exciting day for all students, mums and dads, our staff and school communities, and it’s a very special day to be the Queensland Minister for Education,” she said.

“I am extremely proud of every single one of our 1264 state schools their teachers and other school staff because they do such a good job with our kids.”

The NewsMail visited Bundaberg schools to capture some of those first day experiences.

Around 15 new Moore Park Beach State School Prep students got the jump on the hot temperatures forecast for Monday and arrived bright and early in their brand new uniforms.

At Bundaberg North State School the two very well-behaved cohorts of Prep students sat at the feet of their new teachers, getting straight into the classroom routine with story time.

One St Lukes Anglican School Prep class kicked off with a treasure hunt, while another very lucky group of Prep students started the day with cupcakes to celebrate the birthday of one of their classmates.

Moore Park Beach SS principal Tony Franklin said planning was the key to making a successful transition to formalised education for Prep students and their families.

“One of the critical means to support both Prep students and parents is to be well planned and organised for the first day.,” Mr Franklin said.

“All schools offer a transition program for new prep students towards the end of the previous year, Moore Park Beach State School is no different.

“Giving Prep students and their parents/carers the opportunity to visit the school and walk around and through the buildings is imperative ... If students and parents feel safe, comfortable and well supported, they are more likely to have a successful day.”
