Getting signed to a label is the greatest dream of most musicians.
For Bundaberg’s Pete OBrien, that dream has been realised after many hours of hard work, dedication and dogged determination.
OBrien is set to launch his latest album, Wildfire, in Bundaberg this weekend as he announces he’s been signed with Kentucky based label 9 Lives, a feeder label to Sony.
“There is so much hard work that goes on behind the scenes, long hours and massive amounts of money,” he told the NewsMail.
“For a song to become popular takes many emails to publishing, hundreds of emails to radio stations and again, lots of dollars.”
OBrien’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed.
“I was lucky that a talent scout saw what I have done and how hard I work and then he submitted my music for consideration,” he said.
The well-known singer, who boasts a healthy following on music streaming service Spotify, said the deal was for one album for a start and it would be a matter of seeing how it goes.
“It’s crazy that now my music is registered with the Grammys, which could only be done with an American label,” he said.
“I don’t think I would ever be nominated for one but it’s so cool it’s registered with them.”
Obrien is set to launch Wildfire at North Bundaberg’s Cafe 1928 on Sunday at noon and admission is free for anyone wanting to attend.
“The whole Bundaberg community is invited to join us,” he said.
The muso’s latest offering means “many things”.
“People think of bushfires here in Australia, but a wildfire can destroy everything you own, it can move superfast and it leaves a scar,” he said.
“All these things can happen to someone in their everyday life.
“So, with the album the songs will make you think you are lucky for all you have, also the songs move fast as they are country fused with electronica.
“The scar is that these songs all have hooks, which means they will stick in your head.”
The album is Obrien’s fourth.
“It sort of takes me back in the circle as my first album Strange Daze, which was produced in America,” he said.
Some of the region’s other up-and-coming starts will also be showcases at the launch.
“I am excited to also be able to showcase some of Bundaberg’s upcoming musicians,” he said.
“With many thanks from Jo Carr Singing School we have 11-year-old singing sensation Mercia Griffies.
“Mercia has already sang our National Anthem at various events. She is a little superstar in the making.
“I am also pleased to have Peter Sajko playing. I have watched him and slightly guided him through his musical journey.
“Although Peter has many gigs around town, this performance will be something special and different because I have asked him only to play his originals.”
Obrien’s own young life saw him starting out being inspired by his brother Mikel and said he was inspired by his children who taught him “never to give up”.
“I have been singing and performing for many years,” he said.
“Every weekend I play in a covers duo, 2EZ. We play from Sunshine Coast to Rockhampton.”
Obrien has sage advice for anyone wanting to get up on stage and show the world what they’ve got.
“My advice to any young musician is to work hard, practice, listen and learn from those who have done it for many years,” he said.
“And never give up on your dreams.
“My advice for older musicians is, you’re never too old to rock n’ roll.”
