Ban Ban Springs entrepreneur Kerri-Ann Plowman dreamt for years of opening her own western wear store, and that dream became a reality recently when she opened the doors to Diamonds and Dust in Childers.

The former beautician decided to take the leap and swap her career as a beautician doing laser treatments for a new venture, opening the doors to her new store on October 23.

The store stocks western wear, work shirts, jeans and giftware and there’s more to come - it will soon stock boots and saddlery as well.

Western wear was not Kerri-Ann’s original plan.

The store caters for men, women and kids.

When Covid reached Australia’s shores and lockdowns and restrictions were brought in, Kerri-Ann didn’t think opening a clothing store would be possible.

“I wanted to create clinical face creams and washes and that’s what I specifically created Diamonds and Dust for. I just thought that with the way everything was going it wasn’t going to happen,” she said.

“Childers has lots of cafes and not much else, I think there’s one other little store for women’s clothing. We stock a bit of kids, women’s and men’s and try to cater for every body. We’ll keep building and see how we go.

“I always wanted to open a cafe combined with a western wear shop but there’s so many cafes here I thought I’d just do western wear...it’s something I wanted to do for many years so I thought it was time for a change.”

Kerri-Ann said a skincare for women who work in the country elements will be introduced in the future.

Kerri-Ann and her husband have been living in the region for the two years after moving from Ravenshoe in North Queensland.

They have cattle and Kerri-Ann also breeds Arabian horses, making western wear the perfect fit for her store.

She said it was “very exciting” to have the doors of the store open.

“The response has been really good, everyone said it’s well needed,” she said.

“We’re waiting for the boots to arrive and we’ll slowly build ourselves up. We have the website up and running and it’s also in the process of having the finishing touches done.

“We will slowly introduce face wear as well, which is in the works. I wanted to make something for hard working women in the country weather, it’s something unique we haven’t got yet.”

Diamonds and Dust is located at 94 Churchill St in Childers and is open between 9am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 2.30pm on Saturdays.
