Preliminary works have begun on the new Paradise Dam wall following the appointment of new construction partners for the project.

In January Sunwater announced plans to build a new dam wall 70m downstream from the existing wall after testing found irreparable problems with the concrete mix used in the dam’s construction.

The new dam wall will be designed by Australian engineering services firm GHD Group, in alliance with construction partners CPB Contractors and Georgiou.

GHD Group has been engaged with Sunwater as a consulting engineer on Paradise Dam since 2014, when the unexpected damage to the dam following the 2010 - 2013 floods was identified.

“We have extensive experience working on Paradise Dam and responding to the complexities of this critical regional water infrastructure project,” GHD Alliance Leadership Team member Craig Berry said.

“We look forward to continuing this successful relationship with Sunwater, together with alliance partners CPB Contractors and Georgiou to deliver this new dam wall for the community of Bundaberg.“

While the alliance proceeds with planning and design work for the new wall, Sunwater has engaged Queensland construction firm CMC Group to undertake road upgrades to accommodate the heavy vehicles required to transport materials and equipment to the construction site.

Minister for Water Glenn Butcher said 14 local workers will be involved in the initial upgrade of Paradise Dam Rd, with more jobs to be created as the works progress.

This initial upgrade including pavement realignment, bitumen surfacing, line marking and signage is expected to be completed in late 2024, followed by the construction of a bridge at Degilbo Creek and upgrading sections of Booyal-Dallarnil Rd.

Mr Butcher said the initial works were crucial to the delivery of a safe dam to the region.

“These road upgrades are important enabling works as part of our commitment to build a new wall for Paradise Dam,” he said.

“Delivering water security and a safe dam for the people of the Bundaberg and Burnett regions is a priority - and we need to make sure we get it right.”

ALP Bundaberg MP Tom Smith said, in addition to the 14 Bundaberg residents to be involved in the initial works, eight locals from Harrison Infrastructure Group also worked on the road network planning at the site.
