Road Rage: Why we need to fix our rural roads

Wide Bay roads are costing lives and money as families suffer tragic losses and businesses lose money to repair their vehicles.

A road frequently mentioned by community members for its terrifying and poor condition was Curra Estate Rd, a stretch where two people already lost their lives in 2023.

Not even a month later, the community mourned the loss of a beloved 14-year-old rugby league player who died in hospital following an accident on Tin Can Bay Rd.

The tragic accident triggered a demand for a reduced speed limit and safer bus stops by residents who risk their lives everyday leaving their driveways to merge onto Tin Can Bay Rd.

In January, frustrated Goomeri residents celebrated the first birthday of a “pothole” that has swallowed half the road on a section on Maudsley Street.

RACQ members have named 130 of the region’s unroadworthy stretches plagued by potholes, narrow roads with increasingly heavier vehicles and traffic volume, blind corners and rough surfaces.

A Facebook callout was made by The Gympie Times, NewsMail, Fraser Coast Chronicle, The South Burnett Times and Central and North Burnett Times.

We asked residents to name the worst roads in the region - roads that have been badly patched, littered with potholes from flood damage or even dangerous high-speed stretches just waiting for another accident to happen.

Several potholes have been painted red to warn drivers of the dangers on Curra Estate Rd.
