BOM warns of heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding

A severe storm warning has been issued across a large part of the state’s southeast, as 93mm of rain pelted down in just one hour on the Sunshine Coast amid the ongoing deluge.

A SEVERE storm warning has been issued across a large part of the southeast, as 93mm of rain pelted down in just an hour on the Sunshine Coast.

The bureau warns that thunderstorms embedded with rain bands that could lead to flash flooding are moving very slowly across the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland areas.

A flood warning was issued at 9.30pm for the Noosa and Maroochy rivers.

Swift water rescues were called to assist people trapped in floodwaters at two locations on the Sunshine Coast.

A woman who had been caught in floodwaters on Yandina-Creek Rd in North Arm called police when her car began being slowly swept away.

Police and firefighters assisted the woman out of the car and got her home safely.

About the same time, emergency services were called to reports of a man washed away into a river on Wappa Falls Rd in Yandina.

He had reportedly gotten out of his car and tried to walk across a driveway when he was washed away.

Bystanders rescued him from the water although a car was swept away.

Emergency services were turned back heading to the scene when they were informed everyone was safe and accounted for.

More than 93mm of rain has fallen in Yandina, on the Sunshine Coast, since 7pm.

A large area from Brisbane to Coolangatta is also included in the thunderstorm warning zone.

QFES have urged people not to drive or walk through flood waters.
