Nearly five years after a fairytale wedding in Belgium, Olympic diving great Matthew Mitcham has split from husband Luke Rutherford.

Confidential can reveal the pair parted ways last month with Rutherford sharing a series of cryptic posts on social media and Mitcham silent other than on his OnlyFans account.

Both are understood to still be living in London, where they have been based for several years.

The pair were married at Chateau de Halloy in Ciney in February 2020 surrounded by close family and friends.

At the time, Mitcham, now 36, told Confidential: “The whole thing was so beautiful. I was crying for basically the entire ceremony.”

British dive champion Tom Daley was among those to have sent video messages to the pair for the wedding, at which they had a three-tier carrot, red velvet and rainbow vanilla sponge cake with Mr & Mr on top.

And on Instagram at the time, Mitcham wrote: “After a sustained period of lovely gestures, loyalty, gazing adoringly and many trips to Ikea, I managed to trick Luke into falling in love with me, proposing to me and finally marrying me. “Now he’s stuck with me forever and ever, ha!”

The former professional diver made international headlines after winning gold in the 10m platform diving at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 when official broadcaster NBC didn’t show the Australian athlete hugging and kissing his former partner Lachlan Fletcher during his victory lap of the pool.

At the Beijing games, Mitcham became the first openly gay athlete to win an Olympic gold medal and received the highest single-dive score in Olympic history.

Mitcham won gold in the 10m synchronised platform at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, as well as two silvers that year and four silver medals at Delhi in 2010.

The former athlete competed on SAS Australia last year. He and Tim Robards were the only contestants to pass selection.

In one of the most memorable scenes to play out in the series, Mitcham revealed he had not been “the best husband”.
