Territory Day fireworks sales set to be huge, after cancellation of events last year

Cracker night this year is set to be huge with wholesalers expecting punters to buy big after it was cancelled last year.

FIREWORKS wholesalers are expecting punters to buy big this Territory Day after the popular annual tradition was cancelled because of Covid-19 last year.

Letting off fireworks is only allowed on July 1 – Territory Day – in celebration of the NT gaining independence from the commonwealth government in 1978. Wholesalers are expecting to sell out of fireworks on the day.

Fusion Fireworks owner Luke Caridi said he was expecting to sell between a whopping 110 and 115 tonnes of fireworks on the day and interest to pre-order was already higher than in previous years.

“I’m sure people need to get back out and light some wicks,” he said.

“From our point of view the pre-orders have started coming in early.

“We know there’s that excitement in the air.”

Ropehead, who runs a fireworks shop on the Stuart Highway, said he was expecting a busy day but assured people they wouldn’t run out.

“We’ve got plenty of fireworks and plenty to go around,” Ropehead said.

The fireworks seller for the past two decades even has his own head on a cracker that can be bought from his store.

“My wholesaler (Fusion Fireworks) has designed a fireworks piece for me and it’s called Ropehead’s Local Commotion – a 12-shot cake. That’s probably one of my bestsellers,” he said.

Skylighter FireworX managing director Max Brunner said he was expecting sales of fireworks to be one of the biggest years on record.

“We’ve bought an extra 20 per cent, we have around 80 tonnes of fireworks ready to go. We won’t be short of stock that’s for sure, we are expecting a big surge this year,” Mr Brunner said.

“Don’t leave it till the afternoon, make sure you get in early.” Mr Brunner said sales of fireworks for personal use across the world had risen as public events continued to be cancelled and people had to find their own ways to celebrate occasions at home.

He said they had ordered their stock last October, anticipating well in advance there would be a lot of demand. He said fireworks ordered for last year’s cancelled event had been tested and cleared.
