Live: Palmerston Magpies v Waratah Warriors - NTFL Round 2

Waratah dominated possessions and kicked 14 goals in a row to strangle a quick-starting Palmerston out of the game and claim their first win of the season.

It was the Magpies first game of the season after an opening round bye, and they were eager to kick off their campaign under new coach Mark Tyrrell with a statement.

But while they started impressively, it was the Rick Nolan coached Waratah that piled on the goals when the wind was at their backs and didn’t let off until they won 23.11 (149) to 4.5 (29).

Palmerston started their season at a blistering pace showing impressive signs early with Ricky Walsh dominating through the middle, alongside the club’s new captain Shaun Wilson.

The Magpies seemingly had an extra man at every contest and caught their opposition napping as new recruit Josh Koster fired the opening major.

Wilson and Thomas Antulov got in on the action too, and with other efforts across the ground their tails were up, with the only question being if they had taken full advantage of that momentum.

The momentum shift in the second period provided the answer, as Waratah’s possession focused game came to the fore with the wind now at their backs.

Stand-in captain Scott Carlin dominated the play through the middle and racking up the clearances in the process.

Then it all suddenly became easy as the turnovers and free kicks went the way of the red and whites, and chances were converted into goals.

Brodie Carroll was a standout in front of the posts for the side, coming out of the middle to take the crucial marks and post six to his name.

But he wasn’t the lone scorer as the ball was effectively moved from one end to the other with Tahs intent not just on winning but on piling on the points too after their Round 1 loss.

Meanwhile, the likes of Xavier Blitner impressed with his speed and former Essendon VFL player Ricky Monti showed he’s in for a strong season on his debut for the Tahs.

There were 14 unanswered goals from quarter time to early in the fourth for Waratah until Koster broke the streak, but by then there was clawing back the deficit.

And at the opposite end of that score it was one way traffic once more despite the best efforts of some of Palmerston’s big triers such as former Rising Star winner Ryan Warfe.

“To get that result with a few of our fly-ins in and our first win of the season has the boys up and about ready for more,” Carroll said.

“Credit to Palmerston they gave it to us early, but Ricky told us that we know how we can play and the quality we had, so we just weathered that storm and did what we needed to.

“We knew we were good enough for the game and when we had the wind we just used that to our advantage and let our quality shine through.

“A couple of our young guys showed up like Maxirrick Rogers and Xavier Blitner who showed their unreal pace and skills, they’ve put in a strong preseason and are ready to go.”

PREVIEW

Palmerston will get their first chance to show off where they’re at when they make their opening appearance against a Waratah outfit hunting a bounce back win.

And the NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment from 4.30pm on Saturday.

The Magpies men, who had the bye in Round 1, finished last season without a win to their name but have taken steps in the off-season to ensure this campaign will not be a repeat.

Check the LIVE STREAM schedule below.

Mark Tyrrell, who captained the club to their last premiership at the start of the century, has come in as coach while NTFL premiership winner Shaun Wilson came straight in as a captain.

It’s those changes coupled with a potential influx of juniors that could see this side get some wins, but there will be plenty of questions over the Magpies appearing for the first time this season.

At TIO Stadium they will encounter Waratah, who based on recent years are no pushovers, and after their recent loss to Districts will be eager to even the ledger.

Scott Carlin was one of their best in Round 1, while new recruit Jack Bambury and ruck Riley Irvin showed what they’re made of in the contest.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
