Replay: PINT v Tiwi Bombers—2024-25 NTFL Round 2

The Tiwi Bombers will be a threat to any side this season after blasting by a gutsy PINT, in a match where they showed the brilliance that will get them back to finals.

In just his second game of NTFL footy Marlion Pickett was everywhere from the ruck to providing crucial assists, while Anthony Munkara had one of the marks of the season.

The Bombers went through a slump in the post-Covid years, but an electric 15.11 (101) to 5.5 (35) win proved they can propel themselves into the finals race once more.

PINT actually brought the x-factor early on with Silver Yousif showing off his pace, while their surges into the forward line caught the Tiwi backline by surprise.

Mitchell Grant got a goal off those efforts, but then the Bombers woke up to the occasion and new recruits Braedon McLean and Ashton Hams locked down their defensive end.

As things settled the momentum shifted to Tiwi and then they brought some of their typical magic including an early mark of the year contender from Munkara.

The former Essendon listed star who recently moved back to the Bombers leaped higher than anyone else and with his next move made the score separating goal.

Former Richmond premiership player Marlion Pickett got plenty of the action as he played an influential role in the ruck contest.

His efforts alongside last year’s Rising Star winner Karlson Kantilla gave the Bombers’ midfield, including the ever lively Sam Darely, plenty to work with.

Pickett also proved electric in providing for his forwards, firing off the ball for the likes of Anthony Munkara, who may have taken mark of the season in the first quarter, and Thaddeus Puautijimi to show off their natural flair.

As always Brendan Kantilla was the man making things happen for Tiwi, and though he had a miss or two, still had his typically exciting moments that only happen when the Bombers are on.

The ruck battle became a real contest come the third quarter when the efforts of PINT’s Riley Mayne finally resulted in something concrete.

It was a surge where efforts, including from playing coach Mark Whiley, paid off and it was an occasion in which the Greenants once more found some parity.

But as soon as they did it was goals galore again for the Bombers, with Malachi Walley and Blake Puruntatmeri getting a few each, all the way to the end.

“Our intensity was huge, we improved a few things from last week and we all lifted for this match,” Munkara said.

“I wasn’t expecting to take that speckie, but I had to get up there and try to mark the ball and kick a goal, and to do it like that was unbelievable.

“It was a hard match, but seeing the boys happy, listening to our song, it’s great to be back out here playing with the boys again.

“And to have a guy like Marlion training and playing with us boys from Tiwi is unbelievable good, it’s going to be a great season and hopefully we’ll be back playing finals.”

PREVIEW

PINT and the Tiwi Bombers both got their seasons off to winning starts in Round 1, but back at TIO Stadium only one can keep the undefeated run going.

And the NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment from 7pm on Saturday.

The Bombers played one of their best opening round matches in years when they saw off Wanderers last week and put themselves in the early discussions as genuine contenders.

Marlion Pickett, Anthony Munkara and Braedon McLean were just some of the new additions to the Bombers’ lineup, while Brendan Kantilla starred as best on ground in the 57-point victory.

PINT also had a big day out beating the Darwin Buffaloes in what was their first game under new coach Mark Whiley.

Former Carlton player Lochie O’Brien was a standout on the day with 32 touches, including a couple of score assists, while Chris Nield dominated in front of goal on his return.

The question then is, which of these sides will triumph this time out?
