Replay: Waratah v Palmerston - 2024-25 NTFL Women's Premier League Round 2

The Palmerston women have proven they can finally push back into finals with an impressive first outing against Waratah, where missed goals were the only blight.

In a show the competition has burst wide open, a young Palmerston side overcame a rebuilding Waratah to win 5.12 (42) to 2.2 (14) in a win that could be considered a changing of the guard moment in the NTFL.

Palmerston made threatening play after threatening play early on sticking to the script in every way except in converting those chances into goals.

The likes of Tennele Shields and new captain Hannah Torsey played crucial defensive roles, while the side were able to lock the ball deep in their own forward 50 for sustained periods.

However, Hayley Finning provided height in the Waratah defense and was a keen disruptor blocking plays and kicking rebounds for her side to feed off.

Those efforts alongside more from Ruby O’Dwyer and wayward kicking put paid to many Magpies’ efforts in which Laquoiya Cockatoo-Motlap was a key instigator.

But it was inevitable that nine consecutive behinds would eventually turn into a major, and Taylor Smith was the clincher staying in the contest, grabbing the ball and nailing a snap.

Last year’s Rising Star winner Marika Carlton proved the x-factor as the game wore on and showed her ability to pop up in the right places, and Ella Ward was monumental in the ruck contest.

The Tahs showed some enterprising plays later in the piece, but missing some of their key personnel including Jenna Singh-Lippo hurt.

Palmerston, meanwhile, just chipped away and when push came to shove were the better side setting up a season in which they will be keenly watched by their foes.

PREVIEW

After they narrowly missed out on finals last year, a young and talented Palmerston Magpies women’s side will be eager to kick off a new campaign with victory against Waratah.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the clash from 12.30pm on Saturday.

Palmerston is a team packed with exciting players, including the past two women’s rising star winners, Tatyana Perry and Marika Carlton. Both are sure to be keen to make an impression early.

As the only side not to have yet played a game, the Magpies will be relying on an extra element of surprise to catch the Tahs out.

Meanwhile, this will be a shot for Waratah to get into the winners circle after they missed out in their opener against Southern Districts.

They will be targeting a cleaner outing in front of goal after kicking a wayward 2.7, but know their usual performers such as Jenna Singh Lippo, Ruby O’Dwyer and Brittany Daly can rise to the occasion.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
