‘What’s the point?’: Waleed Aly slams Anthony Albanese

Waleed Aly has penned an article hitting out at Anthony Albanese while calling for forgiveness for Scott Morrison, and the reaction on social media is brutal.

Co-host of Channel 10’s Project and academic Waleed Aly has been mocked on social media after penning a column taking aim at Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Published in The Age, the opinion piece called for people to leave Scott Morrison alone, questioning how long people should be worrying about any alleged wrongdoings by the former prime minister.

Perhaps the most controversial part of the article was its beginning: “One of the (many) odd things about the Scott Morrison secret ministries saga is that it’s a point of overwhelming agreement. Everyone agrees Morrison did the wrong thing by his own colleagues, by the parliament, by the Australian people, and by Australian democracy.

“The points of disagreement are instead matters of emphasis. For how long should it preoccupy us? What is the end point of this episode? And so on.”

Later in the article, Aly laid into Mr Albanese, saying the inquiry seemed to have no purpose.

“So, what exactly is the point of the inquiry?” Aly wrote. “Albanese makes the point that the solicitor-general’s advice is based only on known facts, and that an inquiry might unearth more facts. But what facts could possibly change the solicitor-general’s advice?

“The only thing Donaghue acknowledges he doesn’t know is whether Morrison specifically ordered his ministerial appointments to remain secret. But it seems clear from the advice that nothing turns on this.”

Waleed was criticised on social media for the views expressed in the article, with many finding his opinions on the inquiry “bizarre”.

Twitter user Michelle wrote: “How long should it preoccupy us, Waleed? Umm … until we have answers? Until the people who railroaded our democracy are dealt with?

“Or, and here’s a radical thought, until the media do their job and hold politicians to account?”

Author Richard Anderson wrote: “Waleed Aly in SMH pushing the storm-in-a-teacup line on the Morrison portfolios, assuming everything is already known.

“If we don’t make a fuss about breaches of governance then they quickly become as nothing. Which was the previous government’s modus operandi IMO.”

Former Independent MP for New England Tony Windsor also ripped into the Project host, tweeting: “Sad to watch Waleed Aly develop into a political apologist. He has succumbed to … the need to say something big everyday to appeal to the two second grab market of television.”

Meanwhile Titter user Leichardt wrote: “By a good distance this is one of Waleed Aly’s worst takes in a recent series of bad ones …”

And, lastly, Ian commented: “I always thought Waleed Aly’s critics were too harsh. Silly me.”
