Gold Coast weather: Summer heat could be record breaking as temperatures soar

This week’s hot weather could be a record-breaker on the Gold Coast as summer officially gets underway.

GOLD COASTERS will be hitting the water in droves with temperatures tipped to top 37C by Thursday.

The blistering start to the season will nudge close to the 2019 record of 38.6C in the Hinterland in March. Coomera will swelter, hitting 10C above the Coast’s December average.

Robina’s Sophie Caulton, 6, and sister Alice, 4, were eager to cool off at the Broadwater Parklands as temperatures started to climb.

“When it’s too windy for the beach we love the parklands,” mum Andrea Caulton said.

“They both love the water, we’re always outside when it’s hot.”

Temperatures today are forecast to reach 32C at Coomera, 31C at Nerang, 29C at Surfers Paradise and 28C at Coolangatta.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rosa Hoff said the weekend rain was long gone, but the muggy conditions would take longer to disappear.

“We don’t have any rain forecast for the Gold Coast for the next week so that’s going to mean the moisture we have sitting in the ground surface will be drying off and easing,” she said.

“(Temperatures) will be increasing as we move through the week and winds will also pick up by the end of the week but not as badly as (yesterday).”

Most of the Coast copped a downpour during the weekend. About 41mm fell in parts of the Hinterland and 25mm at Coomera and Tallebudgera Valley.

Ms Hoff said the fire risk would “ease” today and tomorrow but would escalate again on Thursday as temperatures rise.

A bushfire continues to smoulder at Binna Burra near Natural Bridge but was not threatening property last night.

A fire ban remains in place on the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim until at least Saturday.

Smoke is expected around the Hinterland this week but it will be from a film crew shooting around Tamborine Mountain.

Special effects from the TV show production are expected to create smoke around Licuala Dr and Justine Ave until Friday.
