A Toowoomba magistrate revoked a court ordered arrest warrant, issued for a young tradesman, after he showed up at court ready to plead guilty to drug driving.

Mason Phillip Bloom fronted Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 31, to deal with the charge after he was picked up for the crime at Rockville on Saturday, November 19.

Police prosecutor Cameron Francis said officers were patrolling David St at 10.15pm when they randomly intercepted Bloom’s car.

“Police conducted a roadside test and a positive indication was made,” Mr Francis said.
“He was conveyed for further testing (and he) told police he hadn’t taken any illicit drugs in the past 48 hours.

“The further testing confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in his system.”

The court was told Bloom was on a provisional licence at the time on the offence.

Lawyer Brad Skuse noted there was no issue with the way the 19-year-old was driving, and he had no history of drug driving.

Mr Skuse said the apprentice boilermaker was almost fully qualified, and his employer decided to keep him on despite the inevitable loss of his licence.

Magistrate Louise Shephard said because Bloom was on a provisional license at the time he would be off the road for three months – the mandatory minimum.

“Not a great traffic history really, given that you haven’t been driving for long,” she noted.

Ms Shephard fined Bloom $350 and did not record a conviction.
