NEW South Wales has recorded 1043 new local Covid-19 cases and 11 more deaths, while Queensland has announced zero new cases and that face mask requirements will be extended.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian revealed the new numbers in NSW at a press conference on Friday morning.

Earlier, Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles said residents could celebrate a “double doughnut day” with no new locally acquired Covid-19 cases recorded.

He also said southeast Queensland’s face mask requirements had been extended while speaking a press conference at Suncorp Stadium

However, mask rules have been eased slightly.

Southeast Queensland residents can now remove masks once seated in public and do not have to be eating or drinking.

“While we will be extending the restrictions relating to masks, the CHO (Dr Jeannette Young) has recommended some small changes,” Mr Miles said.

“Once you are seated you will be able to remove your mask. You don’t need to wait until you are eating or drinking.

“That also means that schoolchildren can remove their masks once they are seated.

“If you are in a cafe or a restaurant, you will not longer have to wait until you have a drink at the table to remove your mask.”

Dr Young spoke of the risk of the Delta variant spreading and said southeast Queensland residents “just have to persevere a little bit longer” with mask wearing.

“When you stand up please put it on again because we don’t know who you are coming into contact with,” she said.

The update comes as Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has backed away from the national plan to reopen borders and resume international travel once an 80 per cent vaccination target is reached.

On Thursday, Ms Palaszczuk again defended Queensland’s tough border restrictions and said she was “sick of constantly being attacked for doing the right thing”.

Premier ‘sick of constantly being attacked for doing the right thing’

September 24: Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has again fired up in defence of Queensland’s tough border restrictions and says she’s “sick of constantly being attacked for doing the right thing”.

She has brushed off calls for the state to reopen when 80 per cent of eligible residents are vaccinated and believes it could put the current freedoms Queensland enjoys at risk.

“At the moment Queenslanders have more freedoms now that Victorians will when they reach 80 per cent vaccinated,” she said.

“In Victoria at 80 per cent they will be allowed 30 people to visit for Christmas dinner … Queenslanders can have 100 people over.”

“I’m sick of constantly being attacked for doing the right thing.”

Ms Palaszczuk, who hit back at critics during a press conference on Thursday, said she did not want harsher Covid-19 restrictions impacting Queensland residents’ mental health.

“Down in Victoria, they’re going through a horrendous time at the moment where people can’t go to work and kids can’t go to schools,” she said.

Meanwhile, New South Wales recorded 1063 cases and six more deaths as Victoria announced its highest number of new cases this year at 766, with four more people dead.

Queensland chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young has again urged Queensland residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

She compared the Delta Covid-19 variant to a tropical cyclone.

“Don’t wait for the cyclone,” she said.
