A GOLD COAST childcare centre has seen a significant jump in its rating from a government agency, making it among the top centres in Queensland.

St Kevin’s Kindergarten was rated as “exceeding” national quality standards in the report by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The body assesses childcare centres on seven criteria – education, health and safety, physical environment, staffing, relationships with children, partnerships with families and communities, and governance and leadership.

The categories are marked as either “significant improvement required”, “working towards national quality standards (NQS)”, “meeting NQS”, “exceeding NQS” or “excellent”. Each centre is graded an overall rating.

The Benowa facility was a huge improver, moving from a “working towards NQS” rating to “exceeding NQS” in its last two assessments.

The centre is operated by Catholic Early EdCare and the area manager Kellie Crouch said the reputation of the centre has become well known in the suburb in recent years.

“The reputation of the service is known as an exceeding centre,” she said.

“It has now become a major part of the community.”

Kindergarten teacher Michelle Nelson said the feedback from the first assessment was taken on board and practices to make the centre more community focused have helped improve the childcare.

“We took on board what was said and one change we made was to include and respect the first nations people,” she said.

“We got a community member from the Indigenous community to teach the local language and kids are using the words.

“We have built a centre that sets up strong friendships and bonds for families and children moving into school and beyond.”

According to the ratings, 101 of the 321 childcare centres on the Gold Coast have an overall rating of “exceeding NQS”.

Twenty-four of the centres had an overall rating of “working towards NQS”.

No centre received the lowest rating and the Southport School was the only Gold Coast centre to receive an “excellent” rating.
