39-year-old Wongawallan man charged over alleged ram raid of Upper Coomera tobacconist

Police have charged a man over an alleged Gold Coast ram raid in which an ATM was chained to a ute and stolen. Read the latest

Detectives have charged a man after a wild alleged ram raid of a Gold Coast tobacconist in which an ATM was chained to a car and dragged from the store.

Police allege a white ute was used to force entry to the business on Reserve Road, Upper Coomera about 4.00am on March 16.

CCTV released by the Queensland Police Service showed a masked offender in a blue Asics jumper, and wearing yellow gloves, as they reverse the vehicle up to the entrance of the tobacconist.

Seconds later they drive away with a chain attached to the rear of the ute, dragging an ATM down the street.

About an hour after the ram raid, the ute was found on fire at Jourdana Drive in Cedar Creek.

Following investigations a Queensland Police Service spokesman said a 39-year-old Wongawallan man had been charged with a number of offences including unlawful possession of motor vehicles, arson, enter premises and commit indictable offence, and fraud.

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on August 22.
