A man allegedly caught with 10 grams of meth, digital scales, almost $3000 in cash and deal bags claimed the meth was for personal use.

Broderick Gist, 26, appeared before Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday facing drug possession charges.

The court heard Gist was caught on New Year’s Day in a black Ford Territory with stolen number plates at 5pm.

Police officers patrolling Corio spotted the car and attempted to arrest the two men inside.

Gist allegedly got out of the driver’s side door of the car and fled on foot.

He was found 20 minutes later by a canine unit.

The car was searched and digital scales, small plastic deal bags, $302 in cash and 200mls of a thick liquid substance believed to be GHB were found.

He appeared to be drug affected and he was arrested and taken to hospital.

Gist was allegedly caught in similar circumstances just ten days later on January 10 at 8pm.

Police spotted a vehicle in Newtown and the driver appeared to be drug affected.

The man gave a false name and fled the car on foot.

He was apprehended by police where $2400 in cash was found stuffed in his underwear.

Inside the car police located 10 grams of meth, Xanax pills, 30 mls of GHB and plastic deal bags.

Gist, who is currently in custody, claimed in court the drugs found were for personal use.

The prosecution claimed it was a “ludicrous” submission due to the amount of meth seized.

Gist requested a sentence indication from Magistrate Simon Guthrie to determine his possible punishment.

Mr Guthrie said due to Gist’s prior criminal history and the combination of the cash, deal bags and drugs located, a straight community corrections order would be out of range for sentencing.

Instead he indicated he would sentence Gist to seven months imprisonment and an 18-month community corrections order.

Gist accepted the indication.

The matters were adjourned so Gist can be assessed for his suitability for a corrections order.

He will reappear before Geelong Magistrates Court on March 14.
